Lausanne (dpa) - According to the IOC, the German Olympic Sports Confederation has so far refrained from concrete talks about hosting the 2032 Summer Games in the Rhine-Ruhr region.

In February, the DOSB refused to enter into negotiations with the responsible evaluation commission of the International Olympic Committee, said commission chair Kristin Kloster Aasen on Wednesday.

"We respect that," said the Norwegian.

The IOC had previously announced that Brisbane is now the preferred candidate for the 2032 Summer Games.

For the time being, negotiations will therefore only be conducted with the Australians.

For the initiative from the Rhine-Ruhr region, which has high hopes as a possible German applicant, this is a major setback.

On Tuesday, North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) assured that the DOSB was just as much behind the application with the Rhine-Ruhr region as the federal and North Rhine-Westphalia government, sports-enthusiastic citizens and all parliamentary groups in the state parliament.

“This will result in a surge in modernization for the country, both in terms of infrastructure and digitization,” Laschet emphasized.
