Hamburg / Berlin (dpa) - The Hamburg left-wing member of the Bundestag Fabio de Masi is leaving parliament in the autumn for personal reasons.

"I will not run again for the German Bundestag in 2021," said the financial expert on Wednesday.

He has always worked at the maximum limit in the past seven years.

"My son in particular had to stand back too often," said de Masi, explaining his decision.

De Masi has been a member of the Bundestag since 2017.

Before that, the 40-year-old was a member of the European Parliament from 2014, where he made a name for himself in the Panama Papers committee of inquiry into money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion beyond party lines.

In Berlin, the son of an Italian trade unionist and a German language teacher, who was born in Groß-Gerau in Hesse, was able to contribute his specialist knowledge, for example, on the cum-ex and Wirecard scandal and property levy.

Sahra Wagenknecht's former research assistant, however, also quarrels with his party in his farewell declaration.

"The best financial policy will not get us any further if I get respect for my work, but the party is weakening due to strategic errors and appearance - although many of our demands are extremely popular among the population."

He rejects the request made to him to run for the party chairmanship.

"But this requires a common spirit."

In the current phase of his life, however, he does not want to “spend his energy in practiced rituals and power struggles”.

His future plans are still open.

"I trust that I will have an exciting job outside of Parliament," explained de Masi.

He wants to continue to use his network and his public role for important topics such as regulating the financial power of the large digital corporations.

"I would like to work temporarily from my second adopted home, South Africa."

In addition, he will always remain with the FC Bundestag as a left full-back, "when the captain lines me up and I'm in Berlin".
