From December 2020 until today, there have been 559 applications for Swedish citizenship from residents in other Nordic countries.

Around 90 percent are Danes who have applied for Swedish citizenship via the County Administrative Board in Skåne.

The rest have searched in Kronoberg and Blekinge.

In the same period last year, there were 238 applications.

The increase is partly due to the rules for commuters across the strait.

- I think the reason is the problem at the border crossing.

You must show proof of identity, where you live or documents that you work in Sweden.

It is easier with a Swedish passport, says David Olsson, administrative officer at the county administrative board.

If you can show a Swedish passport at the border, it is enough to enter Sweden.

Became a Swedish citizen in two weeks

Claus Thestrup was born and raised in Denmark but has lived in Sweden for the past 17 years with his family.

He works in Copenhagen and it has worked well to commute for him until the border was closed.

- Covid-19 has made it a little harder to get back and forth.

I got citizenship just before Christmas and it went quite smoothly, two weeks and then it was in place.

Then my Swedish passport only took four days to fix.

Three requirements to obtain citizenship

What is required for you to be able to apply for Swedish citizenship, as a Nordic citizen, is that you have turned 18, lived in Sweden for five years and not been sentenced to prison or other custodial sentence during the same period.

- If you meet those criteria, you can get your citizenship in four to six weeks, says David Olsson, administrative officer at the County Administrative Board in Skåne.
