Berlin (dpa) - The festival management of the Berlinale hopes to be able to offer film screenings for the audience in the summer despite the pandemic and coronavirus mutations.

"You don't know at the moment how this will develop," said managing director Mariette Rissenbeek of the German press agency.

"We have great hope that we can take place in the cinema in June, with all the necessary distance and hygiene rules."

The Berlinale will be divided this year.

A digital industry get-together begins on Monday (March 1st) - professionals from the film industry and journalists can watch films online there.

A jury should then also decide on the winners.

And make a very simple announcement, »said Rissenbeek.

The awards are to be presented in the summer - then a multi-day festival is planned, viewers should be able to watch films in the cinema and open air.

Alongside Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is one of the major film festivals.

Fifteen films are running in the competition, including the directorial debut of actor Daniel Brühl called “Nebenan”, the literary film adaptation “Fabian or The Walk to the Dogs” by Dominik Graf and the new film by the French woman Celine Sciamma, most recently with “Portrait of a young woman in Flammen »was successful in Cannes.
