Hamburg's Senator for Health Melanie Leonhard (SPD) has defended the reluctance of the red-green Senate to relax the corona measures.

Even step-by-step plans would be of little use if they had to be withdrawn due to current developments in the pandemic, she said in the citizenry on Wednesday.

"We all want more flexibility, but we are currently in a different situation."

The infection process is moving sideways, and more contagious virus mutants are also on the advance in Hamburg.

The tightening of the mask requirement decided by the Senate is also necessary in view of the spreading "Corona fatigue", said Leonhard.

From Saturday, masks must always be worn in public places in Hamburg if the 1.50 meter distance cannot be maintained.

The Senate is responding to large gatherings of people, as they were seen last weekend in good weather around the Alster, on the Elbe and in the city's parks.

In the future, adults will also have to wear masks on playgrounds.

According to the authorities, the amended regulation is to be published on Friday so that it can come into force on Saturday.

Special session after the federal-state conference

The citizenship will come together on March 10 during the holidays for a special meeting to discuss the results of the upcoming federal-state conference on the corona situation.

A corresponding joint proposal by the government factions of the SPD, the Greens and the CDU was approved by parliament with a large majority.

A request from the AfD, which wanted to hold the special session with the Chancellor before the conference planned for Wednesday (March 3), was rejected.

The Green Group leader Jenny Jasberg called the lockdown a “surreal state” that everyone wished it would end.

In view of the numbers, however, it is a matter of "preventing many more people from dying".

Above all, she expects uniform solutions from the Prime Minister's Conference (MPK) next week.

The MPK “is not to create a patchwork of measures and thus to ensure acceptance”.

The CDU health expert Stephan Gamm described the ongoing lockdown as "indispensable" in view of the numbers.

His parliamentary group colleague Götz Wiese also called on the Senate to create predictability, especially for the economy, with a relaxation plan coordinated with the other northern German states.

Because of the long Corona absenteeism, Hamburg students can now voluntarily repeat the school year.

The school authorities lifted the so-called ban on staying seated for years.

"After the long school closings, it will not always be possible for schoolchildren to reconnect with their learning group," said school senator Ties Rabe (SPD) in support of the reason.
