The number of people infected with the new Corona virus "Covid-19" has exceeded 112 million and 600 thousand people, and at a time when India has crossed the barrier of 11 million infections, the health authorities in Yemen have warned of a possible second wave of the virus, amid the deteriorating health and humanitarian situation.

According to the World Meter website, which specializes in monitoring statistics related to the coronavirus around the world, the number of infections reached 112 million and 676 thousand and 629 cases at 11:00 Mecca time (08:00 GMT).

In developments related to measures to limit the spread of the virus, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged the German government to adhere to the principle of proportionality regarding tightening border controls within the framework of measures to contain the Corona pandemic, considering that the general closure of borders "is a problem."

It should be noted that the internal European dispute over closing borders to contain the pandemic is one of the topics that will be discussed by the European Union summit via the Internet on Thursday.

German authorities have designated the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Tirol as areas with dangerous mutations of the Coronavirus since February 14, so entry is prohibited with few exceptions.

On Tuesday, Germany extended travel restrictions until March 3.

The European Commission had sent a letter to Michael Klaus, the German ambassador to the European Union in Brussels, regarding these restrictions, complaining about many of the regulations, saying they were disproportionate or justified.

curfew

For its part, the Dutch government announced, on Tuesday, the extension of the curfew to March 15, in a measure aimed at combating the spread of the Corona virus that had previously caused violent riots when it came into effect at the end of last January.

The government will announce on March 8 whether it will extend the curfew again beyond the 15th of the same month, which corresponds to the first day of the legislative elections, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said during a press conference.

The curfew is imposed from 21:00 local time to 4:30 am, the first in the Netherlands since World War II, and it was previously extended for the first time to the second of next month.

"Until now, we are still in a very difficult stage," the prime minister said, adding that "there is no escape" from the third wave, according to experts.

For its part, the Israeli authorities announced Tuesday that they will impose a night-time curfew from Thursday evening until Sunday morning on the occasion of Purim (Masquerades), to prevent the population from mixing, and thus the increase in infections with the Coronavirus.

The statement added that during these three days, more than 10 people will also be prohibited from gathering in a closed place, and more than 20 people in the open air.

It is noteworthy that, since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 757,000 people have been officially recorded as infected with "Covid-19", of whom more than 5,600 died.

The status of Yemen

In Yemen, health authorities in the government-controlled part said today that hospitals must prepare for a possible second wave of the Corona virus, and take measures to prevent its spread.

Testing and monitoring are limited in the war-torn country, but confirmed cases have risen in the past ten days, after declining since last September to only two cases per day.

The government has recorded 2,187 cases of coronavirus, of which 620 died. The Houthi authorities, who control most large urban centers, have not provided figures since May, when they said they had recorded 4 cases and one death.

The United Nations and aid agencies, which have been preparing for several months to face a possible second wave during the winter, say that these official figures underestimate the spread of the virus.

The Supreme Committee concerned with combating the spread of the virus said on Twitter that the Ministry of Health has called on hospitals and medical centers to take preventive measures from isolating suspected cases, announcing confirmed cases, and initiating epidemiological examinations and evaluating the situation of isolation centers, laboratories, and medical swab centers.
