Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin CDU parliamentary group has clearly spoken out against expropriations in a resolution.

«We warn against this if old socialists want to ax here.

The result would be a declaration of surrender on housing policy, which is directed against tenant interests in Berlin, ”said CDU parliamentary group leader Burkard Dregger on Wednesday.

"My group stands by the fundamental right to property."

The "Deutsche Wohnen & Co. expropriate" initiative is committed to "socializing" real estate companies with more than 3,000 apartments in Berlin in return for compensation.

As of Friday, she wants to collect around 170,000 signatures as part of a referendum in order to get a vote on it.

"We call on the Senate and the Governing Mayor to clearly distance themselves from the goals of the referendum," said Dregger.

In its resolution “Berlin cannot build on expropriations”, the CDU parliamentary group spoke out against the initiative's concerns.

The expropriation efforts exacerbated the crisis of confidence in the Berlin housing industry and prevented what the housing market needed most: housing to combat the housing shortage.

The billions in compensation would be the bankruptcy of Berlin, according to the Christian Democrats.

The Berlin Left announced on Wednesday that it would support the initiative in collecting signatures for its referendum.

Federal Minister for Family Affairs and SPD state chairman Franziska Giffey, on the other hand, has also spoken out against expropriations.
