Berlin (dpa / bb) - Almost 550,000 fare dodgers were caught in Berlin last year in the subways, buses and suburban trains.

Of these, there were almost 250,000 cases at the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe BVG, in which the fine of 60 euros was imposed, according to a response from the Senate to a request from the left.

That was 94,000 fewer than in the previous year (-27 percent).

The reason was the corona pandemic.

Because fewer people drove buses and trains, the BVG also checked fewer: only almost 7 million passengers in 2020 instead of 11.4 million checks as in the previous year.

In total, BVG recorded 728 million journeys with its means of transport.

The S-Bahn was checked as much as in 2019 and a similar number of dodgers were caught: around 300,000 in almost 10 million checks.

Between three and four percent of the passengers checked on BVG and S-Bahn did not have a ticket in 2020.
