Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - After the double murderer Norman Franz, who has disappeared for more than 20 years, a global public search has started.

For the first time, all Interpol member states are involved, reported the State Criminal Police Office in North Rhine-Westphalia on Tuesday in Düsseldorf.

The double murderer, who was finally convicted in 1996, managed to escape from prison in Hagen in 1997.

In the same year he is said to have shot another three people in robberies in Halle and Weimar.

In 1998 he was caught in Albufeira, Portugal, where he had lived with his wife and child.

In 1999 Franz managed to escape again, this time from the Lisbon prison.

Since Tuesday, Interpol has been searching for the alleged serial killer on its front page on the Internet and on social media accounts in 194 countries.

Europol also included Franz on his website of Europe's most wanted criminals (“Europes most wanted”).

Three years ago, after the last major search call, more than 50 references to the now 51-year-old Franz were received.

He was not caught.

There are no more recent photos of him.

The target investigators of the State Criminal Police Office of North Rhine-Westphalia have therefore posted a voice sample from a recorded phone call online.

There is a reward of 25,000 euros for hints about the capture of Franz.
