While the coronavirus epidemic is on the rise in the northern city, its mayor Patrice Vergriete wants to convince the government to opt for another solution than confinement.

Proposing a strategy "zero regrouping, zero gathering", the elected official considers that it is necessary "to try everything before the measures of deprivation of liberty".

Will Dunkirk be able to escape confinement?

While, faced with the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic due to the English variant, the government is considering "additional braking measures", could the city of the North experience the same fate as the coast of the Alpes-Maritimes, where has new containment been put in place for the next two weekends?

For his part, the mayor of the town, Patrice Vergriete, tries to convince the executive to leave "one last chance" to the inhabitants.

"We will not oppose a confinement if it were to take place, because it is a difficult measure which is taken", warns the elected official at the microphone of Europe 1. Nevertheless, he adds, "we think that 'you have to try everything before the measures of deprivation of liberty, because nothing is worse in a democracy than the measures of deprivation of liberty ".

"A mayor is positioned on prevention," adds Patrice Vergriete.

"We want to give the Dunkirk population one last chance so as not to be confined".

"Zero regrouping, zero gathering"

But what alternative solution is there?

"If we want to avoid confinement, it will be zero regrouping, zero gathering, it's a kind of last chance before a measure of deprivation of liberty that I asked Olivier Véran", explains Patrice Vergriete.

And to conclude: "What we have proposed to the government is an immense responsibility of the Dunkirk people, every minute of their life".
