H2 Green Steel was looking for an area of 500 hectares and proximity to electricity to establish its fossil-free steel production, and they found the land in northern Svartbyn outside Boden.

After 2024, the steel will be transported out via the port of Luleå and a research department will be established at Luleå University of Technology.

714 football pitches

500 hectares of land corresponds to 714 football pitches and it is thus a gigantic area.

- We looked at different alternatives together with Green Steele and discussed their needs.

Boden could offer such a large area, but we in Luleå could not.

We mainly looked at the Hertsö field, but it is not as big as northern Svartbyn.

Therefore, Boden will get the new industry on its land, says Luleå's municipal councilor Carina Sammeli (S).

"Brilliant start"

But despite the fact that the old steel city of Luleå lost out on the new industry, she thinks that the investment in Boden is "shit fun" and that it is about a collaboration in a common labor market, between two municipalities.

- I believe that both Luleå and Boden will be steel centers to be reckoned with in the future.

I am happy that there will be a steel investment in Boden.

It will also have a positive effect on Luleå, says Carina Sammeli who is starting to get warm in her clothes:

- I think I got off to a brilliant start as a municipal councilor.

Yesterday we made a decision about Malmporten in Luleå harbor, today we get to present H2 Green Steel's huge investment and I also hope that Hybrit comes to Luleå.

We work hard for that, she says.
