After the news of the opening of the Rafah land crossing between the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian side, on a daily basis, hope has returned to the young Arab country from the Gaza Strip, who suffers from complete paralysis as a result of a severing of the spinal cord due to his injury at work.

Arab (34 years) needs surgery for a spinal cord transplant, in order to return to support his sick parents and his young family, as he was unable to do so due to the closure of the Rafah crossing for long periods, and it was opened for only three days, during three consecutive months.

Egypt opened the Rafah crossing on the ninth of February for an indefinite period, for the first time in years, which allows residents of the besieged sector to travel abroad, noting that the crossing has remained closed since November 27, after it was opened for three days exceptionally in both directions.

The opening of the Rafah land crossing that connects the Gaza Strip with Egypt is a glimmer of hope for the two million and 200,000 Palestinian citizens, specifically patients, students and humanitarian cases, especially since this crossing is the only outlet for Gazans to the world.

On the waiting list

Young Arab said in an interview with Emirates Today: “In mid-2013, I suffered an injury while working in the construction profession, when a crane fell on my body, and immediately I was injured in a laceration in the spinal cord.

He adds: "I need a complex surgery to transplant the spinal cord in hospitals outside the besieged sector, where there are not enough resources, in addition to the high cost of this operation, which I cannot provide part of."

He continues, "There are thousands of cases of patients who are in dire need of treatment, and surgical operations are performed in external hospitals, and as a result of the land crossing being closed for long periods, the number of patients whose names have long been waiting in the waiting list has accumulated in hospitals of the Ministry of Health."

The injured young man hopes that he will be included in the list of recipients of facilities from the Department of Treatment Abroad in the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the coming periods, so that he will have the opportunity to be treated abroad, which he is waiting for to be able to move and work again.

Complete the study

On the other hand, Doctor Yazan Abu Saad can complete his studies at London universities after many months of waiting.

Abu Saad said, "I studied medicine at Alexandria University, and a year and a half ago I returned to the Gaza Strip to visit my family after an absence of seven years, hoping to travel after that to start my educational career in the field of medicine, as I got approval to continue studying in London."

He added: “A month after reaching Gaza, the Rafah crossing was closed, initially for security reasons due to the situation in Sinai, and then due to the Corona pandemic, and at that time the Egyptian authorities used to open the crossing, but for only three days, intermittently, two months apart from the other. The least, but I did not get a single chance to travel because of the high number of travelers. ”

The Palestinian doctor stresses the need to open the Rafah land crossing 24 hours in order to alleviate the suffering inflicted on the Gazans, due to the imposition of the siege and the closure of the main crossings.

persistent need

On the other hand, the Palestinian writer and political analyst Hussam al-Dajani notes that the move to open the Rafah land crossing indefinitely is a positive step for the benefit of the Egyptian and Palestinian parties, and it serves Egypt politically and economically.

Al-Dajani said, "There is an urgent need to open the Rafah land crossing on the southern borders of the Gaza Strip, as it is the only lung for the residents of the besieged strip to the world, and Egypt is the strategic depth of the Palestinian people. Therefore, this step comes within the context of the historical and moral responsibility, and the fraternal relations that bind the two peoples."

He added, "In my estimation, with the improvement of the relationship between Egypt and the (Hamas) movement, opening the Rafah crossing has become a necessity and a requirement for all the Palestinian people. It is a need for patients and students, and for everyone who wants tourism and trade, which is in the commercial interest of the two peoples."

The political analyst shows that the opening of the Rafah crossing is closely linked to the success of the Palestinian factions' dialogues leading up to the general Palestinian elections that took place in the Egyptian capital at the beginning of this month.

He explains that the factions clearly presented the Palestinian people's demand to open the Rafah crossing, and Cairo assesses the reality and general climate, and the success of the national reconciliation dialogues is within the wider regional context, so the Arab Republic of Egypt went to this approach in order to alleviate the humanitarian situation and improve the movement of citizens in the Gaza Strip. Gaza, and this is the role of Egypt that we are constantly witnessing.

There are thousands of cases of patients, who are in dire need of treatment and surgeries in external hospitals, and as a result of the closure of the land crossing for long periods, the number of patients accumulated, whose names were long waiting lists inside the hospitals of the Ministry of Health.

Hossam Al-Dajani:

- “The factions have clearly presented the demand of the Palestinian people to open the Rafah crossing, and Cairo is assessing the reality and the general climate, and the success of the national reconciliation dialogues is within the wider regional context, so Egypt went to this approach in order to reduce the humanitarian situation and improve the movement of citizens in Gaza, and this is the role of Egypt, which we are constantly witnessing. ”
