A man, arrested on February 16, will soon be tried before the Criminal Court of Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales), suspected of having detained protected birds, in the box of an HLM, in the Catalan capital, indicates the police.

A few days before his arrest, police officers were intrigued by the presence of cages, containing colorful birds, in this garage.

A quick investigation made it possible to identify the owner of the box, and to conduct a search.

An endangered species

Police officers and inspectors from the French Biodiversity Office have discovered several caged birds, "without light".

Five of the six birds were European goldfinches, an endangered species particularly targeted by trafficking.

"The owner, questioned about their origin and their detention, could only provide ubiquitous explanations", indicate the police services of the Pyrénées-Orientales, which specify that the capture and / or detention of protected species is punishable 150,000 euros fine and three years in prison.
