SSAB produces 8.8 million tonnes of steel a year globally, of which 3.8 million tonnes at the steelworks in Luleå and Oxelösund.

The new company H2 Green steel plans for a production of five million tonnes annually on Norra svartön in Boden.

One could imagine that H2GS will be a serious competitor in terms of customers, raw materials, electricity and labor.

At SSAB, they choose to see it in a different way.

- We believe that it is good if there can be more people who help build a market for fossil-free steel, says Viktoria Karsberg, communications manager at SSAB.

Receipt for LKAB that they invested correctly

From LKAB's side, H2GS's plans are seen as proof that their own investment in carbon dioxide-free iron fungus is right.

LKAB's conversion of production from pellets to iron sponges is based on steelworks in Europe gradually replacing their blast furnaces with so-called arc furnaces and participating in the conversion to fossil-free steel production.

According to LKAB, the investment from 2H Green steel is completely in line with that plan.

Do not want to comment on cooperation

From 2H Green steels' side, LKAB is seen as a possible supplier of pellets in the first stage, and iron fungus in a later stage.

However, the mining company does not want to comment on what possible collaborations may look like.

- These are the kind of conversations we have with current and future customers in that case, says Niklas Johansson, director of communication and climate at LKAB.
