Doha (AP) - Qatar's volleyball association QVA has rejected reports of certain dress codes for beach volleyball players at a World Tour tournament next month.

"We want to make it clear that we are not making any demands on what athletes should wear at the event," said a statement.

Qatar refers to the World Beach Games 2019 in the emirate, where beach volleyball players played in sports bikini.

The Germans Karla Borger and Julia Sude decided not to start the tournament in March because of the dress code that was not acceptable in their opinion.

Qatar's authorities had stipulated that players should start in shirts and knee-length pants instead of the usual sports bikini.

“We don't want to support that,” said Borger and Sude to the news magazine “Spiegel”.

Qatar's volleyball federation now contradicts the representation of the world federation FIVB and the player organization IBVPA.

In an email from the FIVB to «Spiegel» it was stated that the world association respects the culture and traditions of the host country.

The dress code was requested by the Qatari authorities concerned.

The players had been asked about the dress code and had shown their agreement.

This year, the world association has for the first time added a tournament in Qatar for women to its calendar.

So far only men have been allowed to play there.

The world association emphasized that it had not yet received any negative feedback for the tournament in Qatar.
