Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The Left in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to support its call for a tax on the wealthy to finance the consequences of the corona with a poster campaign.

"We are calling for a one-time property levy from billionaires and multi-millionaires in Germany based on the model of burden sharing after the Second World War," said the chairman of the left-wing parliamentary group in the state parliament, Simone Oldenburg, on Tuesday at the presentation of the large posters in Schwerin.

These are to be used nationwide.

«The Corona crisis continues, and there is no end in sight.

The federal and state aid programs to mitigate the damage are unavoidable in these times, but tear big holes in the state budget, ”argued the opposition politician.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania alone decided to borrow EUR 2.85 billion in the previous year in order to feed the corona protection fund.

The country's mountain of debt, which has now shrunk, increased again from 9.4 to 12.2 billion euros.

The question is who has to pay for it in the end.

«This cannot and must not be the saleswoman in the supermarket.

Rather, those who own the supermarket chains and who have benefited enormously from the crisis must be held responsible, "said Oldenburg.

According to the ideas of the left, the richest 0.7 percent in Germany should pay a property tax with allowances for private and business assets.

“This could lead to a total of at least 310 billion euros in additional income in the federal government.

If the property tax were applied as a tax that would benefit the federal states, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania could account for around 6 billion euros, ”said Oldenburg.

Since the funds are to be distributed over 20 years, the country can receive 300 million euros annually and thus repay a large part of the debt.
