Leverkusen (AP) - Bundesliga soccer team Bayer Leverkusen has to do without Lars Bender for the time being after meniscus surgery.

The 31-year-old will be absent for the foreseeable future, the club announced on Tuesday.

In the league home game against VfL Wolfsburg at the end of January, Bender sustained a muscle injury and a contusion of the right lateral meniscus, which developed into a tear.

The defensive player had already been operated on on Friday.

It seems realistic that Bender could return to training at the end of March after the international break.

The former international had already missed six competitive games since the Wolfsburg game, of which Bayer only won one.
