Hanover (dpa / lni) - Invasive animal species such as raccoons, raccoons, nutria and Egyptian goose are spreading more and more in Lower Saxony.

This was shown by the so-called hunting routes, i.e. the hunters 'prey, in the 2019/2020 hunting year, announced the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture and the State Hunters' Association on Tuesday.

Compared to the previous year, the increase in the number of animals killed was the highest for raccoons with an increase of almost 36 percent to 20,414, followed by nutria with an increase of almost 28 percent to 41,369 animals.

Of the raccoon dogs, the hunters shot a good 26 percent more and thus 4715 animals, with the Egyptian goose there was an increase of almost 10 percent to 7900 animals.

In addition, the hunters killed 70,481 wild boars - a good 26 percent more than in the previous year and a record result.

This is a contribution to the containment of the African swine fever and "extremely important for our agriculture in Lower Saxony," said Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast (CDU).

However, given the corona pandemic, the record result will probably not be repeated in the current hunting year, said Helmut Dammann-Tamke, President of the Lower Saxony State Hunters' Association.

Many hunts have failed, especially in November and December a large part of the hunt is obtained.

The prey of mouflon and red deer fell slightly, while there was a slight increase in roe deer and fallow deer.

The positive development in small game species such as the hare and pheasant is encouraging: Favorable weather conditions with dry and warm spring in 2018, 2019 and 2020 were good for the animals.
