February 23, 2021 Riots broke out in Ecuador in four prisons in the country.

50 inmates of the penitentiary centers of Guayaquil, El Turi, Cotopaxi lost their lives, as reported by the website of the newspaper 'El Comercio'.

It seems that the police officers are trying to bring back to normal, while the military guards the external spaces of the structures.

Riots also in the Lacatunga prison, but the number of victims is unknown.

The Ecuadorian Interior Minister, Patricio Pazmiño, told the media that it is "a concerted action by criminal organizations to generate violence in prisons".

According to the Primicias website, the President of the Republic, Lenin Moreno, spoke of "a struggle between organized mafias" and recommended "a progressive and prudent use of force by the police to ensure the safety of detainees".

Moreno called the incident "strange" and assured that in October 2019 supporters of the then President Rafael Correa "hired criminals who were at liberty to cause unrest and counter the legitimate aspirations of the protesting indigenous peoples. It would not surprise me - he concluded - even if today it were their maneuver ".
