Stuttgart / Columbus (dpa) - The truck manufacturer Daimler wants to cooperate with the US engine manufacturer Cummins on medium-duty commercial vehicle engines.

To this end, a strategic global partnership is planned, for which the companies have signed a letter of intent, as Daimler Truck announced in Stuttgart on Tuesday.

Further steps in the cooperation would be explored.

In the future, engines from Cummins would be used in trucks and buses from Daimler Trucks & Buses worldwide.

Daimler itself wants to focus on the further development of emission-free drive technology and concentrate on heavy drive trains.

The cooperation also includes securing the future of engine production at the Mannheim location, it said.

On the premises of the Mercedes-Benz plant, Cummins will set up an engine production facility in order to produce medium-duty engines with the Euro 7 emissions standard from the second half of the decade - for Daimler and other customers.

"The declaration of intent between Daimler Truck AG and Cummins equips engine production at the Mannheim location for the future and at the same time strengthens our competitiveness," said Daimler truck boss Martin Daum.

In Mannheim there are currently over 4800 employees in engine and component production.
