Oberstdorf (AP) - Cross-country team boss Peter Schlickenrieder has no hope of a surprising medal from his athletes at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf.
«If I'm honest: No.
I say that is not realistic, "said the 51-year-old of the German press agency when asked.
For a long time there had been at least the small hope of being able to run for the podium in the relay.
Schlickenrieder said, however: "In the relay competitions we saw that we are relatively far from a medal."
The former top athlete stated the following as a goal: "It is important to me that we get every athlete to perform at their best - in the season and possibly in their life."
The World Cup competitions in Oberstdorf begin on Wednesday (from 12.30 p.m.) with the first qualification in cross-country skiing.
In the individual, Katharina Hennig had recently attracted attention with a few top placements and won over the prestigious Tour de Ski.
However, Schlickenrieder does not believe that the 24-year-old is enough to make a podium.
Hennig said the route in the Allgäu is not that good, he said.
In addition, their prime discipline, the 10-kilometer race in the classic technique, is not on the program.
