Bayreuth (dpa / lby) - A case of avian influenza has been confirmed in the Bayreuth animal park "Röhrensee".

The H5N8 virus was detected in a mallard, the city announced on Tuesday.

In the Bayreuth region, stricter measures have been in place since an outbreak in a poultry farm a few weeks ago to prevent further spread as far as possible.

Since the beginning of February, poultry have been compulsory in the city and district.

A spokesman for the city emphasized that the city garden department also housed the around 230 birds in the zoo's interior rooms and covered cages.

According to the city, it was unclear whether the animal disease had already spread further among the wild birds in the zoo.

If citizens find dead birds, they should not touch them and report them to the veterinary office.

Avian influenza is not considered dangerous for humans.

The infectious disease has appeared in Bavaria since November.

There have recently been cases in the districts of Starnberg, Passau, Bayreuth, Haßberge, Landsberg am Lech, Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen and Erlangen-Höchstatt.

The animal disease occurs mainly in water birds.

The highest incidence and death rates are observed in chickens and turkeys - in some cases up to 100 percent.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
