Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing sends a small plane into the sky over Berlin.

It is expected to be in use for the first time on Wednesday and fly over the land in strips from west to east or east to west.

The aim is to use so-called laser scanning to generate an up-to-date, high-resolution digital terrain model of all of Berlin, as the Senate Department announced on Tuesday.

A total of three flight missions are planned for airborne laser scanning (ALS).

According to a spokeswoman for the Senate Administration, the two other dates have not yet been set.

Whether the flight planned for Wednesday to record the terrain and surface structures of Berlin will take place depends on the weather and largely on the height of the cloud.

If so, the Senate Administration asks for understanding for the associated disruptions.

According to the Senate Department, the digital terrain model is used for urban planning, climate models, heavy rain risk maps, tunnel and transport construction as well as hydraulic engineering.

It has to be renewed because the last laser scan flight was around twelve years ago.

With ALS technology, invisible laser beams are emitted from a small aircraft.

They scan the earth's surface and the objects on it - including houses, trees, power lines and masts.

This creates a three-dimensional image of the earth's surface.
