Kronoberg accounts for the largest population increase in 2020.

Here, the population has increased by 794 people, or 0.4 percent.

Kalmar County increased its population by 564 people, corresponding to 0.2 percent.

In both counties, it is immigration that is mainly pointed out as the reason for the small increase.

But the increase is unevenly distributed.

The locomotives in Kronoberg are Älmhult and Växjö, while Uppvidinge and Lessebo on the contrary have reduced their population somewhat.

In Kalmar County, it is Mörbylånga and Kalmar that pull up the statistics, while Högsby is one of the municipalities in the country that has reduced its population the most, by over 3 percent in 2020. In total, 7 out of 12 municipalities in Kalmar County reduce the number of inhabitants during last year.

Stihna Johansson Evertsson, chairman of the municipal board in Högsby municipality, said in 2020 that they were worried about the development in the municipality.

Minimum population increase since 2005

Overall in Sweden, the population increase is the smallest since 2005, partly due to slightly fewer births, but also due to the fact that immigration has not been so low in 15 years.

The pandemic may also have contributed to the statistics: In Kronoberg County, excess mortality in 2020 was the second highest in the country.

12.6 percent more people died in Kronoberg in 2020 than the average during the years 2015-2019, which could be attributed to the pandemic.
