Cologne (dpa) - After the destruction of a memorial site for victims of the racially motivated attack in Hanau in Cologne, the police are looking for witnesses.

The perpetrators tore off foils and threw them down an embankment between Saturday afternoon, 3 p.m. and Sunday noon, the police said on Monday.

Since a politically motivated background cannot be ruled out, the criminal police state security is now investigating.

The names and pictures of the victims of the Hanau attack could be seen on the laminated foils.

On the evening of February 19, 2020, the 43-year-old German Tobias R. shot nine people in several locations in the Hessian city of Hanau before allegedly killing his mother and then himself. Before that, he had pamphlets and videos with conspiracy theories and racist views published on the Internet.
