Seligenstadt / Berlin (dpa) - Despite the beautiful weather, ice cream parlors in Germany do not have an optimal start to the season.

Due to the lockdown, the entire restaurant will remain closed, the ice cream can only be sold to take away.

“We are enjoying the fact that spring is coming.

But it is not the beginning of the season that one is used to when people eat ice cream and drink cappuccino on the terrace in the sun, ”said Annalisa Carnio, spokeswoman for the Union of Italian Ice Cream Manufacturers in Germany (Uniteis).

After the spring-like weekend, the high «Ilonka» will bring plenty of sun in the coming days.

The temperatures remain very mild in many places with highs of 15 to 20 degrees.

According to Carnio, the start of the season in the industry often depends on the weather.

She assumes that most of the ice cream parlors that were in the winter break will start selling again these days, even if some of them only on the weekends.

Because of the lockdown there is a certain amount of uncertainty, Carnio said.

"But we have great hope that things will really start again from Easter."

So that the café and terrace business will be up and running again.

The association, which has around 1000 members with around 2200 ice cream parlors in Germany, also chooses the ice cream of the year every year.

In 2020, the choice fell on “Golden Milk”, a variation of the Fior di latte variety, supplemented with turmeric and ginger.
