Saarbrücken (dpa) - At the Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), the director's post is reassigned.

Today, Monday, the Broadcasting Council meets in Saarbrücken, three candidates stand for election.

SR editor-in-chief Armgard Müller-Adams, deputy SR program director Martin Grasmück and ARD editor-in-chief Rainald Becker have applied for the most powerful office in the ARD institute in Saarland.

The candidates first introduce themselves personally to the members of the Broadcasting Council.

The 39-strong committee then chooses in camera.

It is made up of political, economic, ideological, religious and social groups, among other things, and is intended to take account of the diversity of opinions of the population.

Among other things, the Broadcasting Council advises the artistic director on programming.

For a successful artistic director election, a two-thirds majority of the votes cast in one of the first three ballots - at least two thirds of the members must be present - must be attributable to a candidate.

If none of the applicants get this share of the vote, the Broadcasting Council will vote again on Tuesday.

The two-thirds hurdle still applies to elections four to six.

From the seventh ballot and subsequent ballots, the majority of the votes cast is sufficient.

The election is necessary because the director Thomas Kleist (65), who has been in office since 2011, will be leaving at the end of April.

Actually, his term of office would have lasted two years.

He justified his step as follows: The time is ripe for a change of management to the younger generation.

At SR, around 620 employees work in 544 permanent positions and almost 200 freelance employees (permanent freelancers).

With Radio Bremen, the SR is one of the smallest of the nine ARD broadcasters.
