Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - According to the Federal Employment Agency in Saxony, the Corona lockdown in spring 2020 cost thousands of mini-jobs.

The number of marginal part-time employees had fallen by 17,300 to 206,300 within a year by June 2020, the regional directorate in Chemnitz said on a dpa request.

That is a minus of 7.7 percent.

Figures for later months are not yet available.

Overall, the corona crisis had a much stronger effect on mini-jobbers than on other employment relationships, it said.

In view of this, the food-pleasure-restaurants union called for the current mini-job rules to be changed.

Mini jobs are remunerated with up to 450 euros per month.

No unemployment insurance contributions are paid for them.

That is why there is no short-time working option for mini-jobbers.

Instead, many of these jobs were terminated during the Corona crisis.

According to the regional directorate, this mainly affected employees in industries that have suffered particularly from closures, such as the catering trade.

But many mini-jobbers also lost their jobs in cleaning, security and event management.

Olaf Klenke, State District Secretary East of the Food-Enjoyment-Restaurants Union, reminded us that the majority of mini-jobbers are women.

He called for mini-jobs to be regularly included in social security.

Klenke: "Now we are getting our revenge that this demand we and others have not implemented for years."

According to the employment agency, around every eighth employee is a mini-jobber across Saxony.

But their number fell years ago - in 2014 it was more than 235,000. The reason given was the introduction of the minimum wage.

As a result, many mini jobs have been converted into jobs subject to social insurance, it said.

The upward trend on the labor market up to 2019 also promoted the decline in mini-jobs.

Now, according to the experts, the corona crisis has apparently reinforced this trend again.
