The mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, visited the historic park on Monday and announced that
on April 1 it will be fully open
.
The storm affected 12,180 of the 17,400 trees in the Retiro, 70%.
Of them,
about 1,000 copies have been unrecoverable
and municipal technicians have had to tear them down to avoid accidents.
As of this Monday, the 22nd, the busiest areas, such as the Coche Promenade, the surroundings of the Lake, the Casa de Vacas or the entrances of the Puerta de Alcalá or the Casón del Buen Retiro are already passable, more or less the 60% of the green space in the center of Madrid.
There are still
many closed areas
that remain dangerous, especially due to the poor condition of the conifers.
It is, for example, the Campo Grande, the Rosaleda and part of the Isabel II gardens, according to the Madrid City Council.
On April 1, the Environment Area, led by Borja Carabante, estimates that the metropolitan garden may be almost entirely open.
It can be circulated throughout the park except for the
three areas that are under construction
: the Paseo de México, the meteorological environment and the Los Gatos mountain.
Martínez-Almeida has made during his visit an
appeal to "the responsibility"
of the people of Madrid to respect the areas still marked and prohibited access for their own safety.
Fines for entering the prohibited areas can range from 60 to 600 euros.
Environment has removed, since the park closed on January 11, 20,000 cubic meters of wood, branches and plant debris.
Among the trees that have been saved is the oldest specimen in the park and probably in Madrid, a
