Nearly half of the residents in Texas, USA, suffered severe cold damage from winter storms, still suffer from water shortages, CNN reported.

According to CNN, the Texas Environmental Commission says more than 1300 public water systems in the state have reported service outages, affecting more than 14.1 million residents in 197 counties.

With just less than half of the state's total population of 29 million, water shortages are part of the impact of widespread blackouts following the cold, CNN explained.

Although restoration is in progress, with the weather clearing and electricity supply resumed, many homes still remain damaged, such as broken water pipes and flooding, CNN said.

Some Texas residents have also faced an unprecedented increase in energy rates.

Electricity demand surged last week as a large-scale power grid failure occurred in a cold wave.

Millions of people have lost electricity, but CNBC broadcasts that some households that received electricity during this period will face huge bills of up to $10,000 (KRW 11 million).
