Libya's powerful interior minister,

Fathi Bachagha

, escaped an assassination attempt on a highway near Tripoli on Sunday, an official close to him told AFP.

The Bachagha convoy was

attacked by shots

fired from an armored vehicle, it added.

"The police escort that followed the minister responded. Two of the attackers were arrested, the third is in the hospital. The minister is fine," according to the same source.

Fathi Bachagha, a heavyweight in local politics, was returning from a

routine visit to the headquarters of a new security unit

under his ministry.

Bachagha was appointed in 2018 Minister of the Interior of the Government of National Unity (GNA), recognized by the United Nations (UN) and based in Tripoli.

The 58-year-old politician who made the fight against corruption his workhorse sounded loudly for the post of interim prime minister, which finally went to

Abdel Hamid Dbeibah

in early February

, as part of a process sponsored by the ONU.

Ten years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya remains mired in a political crisis, with two adversaries so far: in the west, the GNA - supported by Turkey - and in the east, Marshal Khalifa Haftar, backed by Russia.

October 23

, the two rival parties signed a permanent ceasefire agreement with "immediate effect", after five days of discussions in Geneva under the auspices of the UN.

On February 5, Dbeibah, an engineer by training and wealthy businessman, and three other members of a presidential council were appointed to

ensure the transition

until the December 2021 national elections.
