Frankfurt (Oder) / Schwedt (dpa / bb) - While fleeing from the police, a car driver in Schwedt (Uckermark) rammed a patrol car and seriously injured a police officer.

The police later found several hundred cartons of unpaid cigarettes in the man's vehicle, as they announced on Sunday.

On early Sunday morning, officials wanted to stop the car that appeared suspicious to them.

Instead, the 44-year-old accelerated his car and fled towards the Polish border.

A police car followed him, while a second vehicle stood in his way with flashing lights, the police further announced.

The fugitive then rammed his car into the police vehicle.

A 44-year-old police officer suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter.

The person who caused the accident was also seriously injured and taken to hospital.

The homicide squad is investigating him for an attempted homicide.

Three inmates of another car, suspected by the police, were provisionally arrested.

Whether the three men aged 50, 45 and 31 are related to the other case is currently being determined.
