Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Thousands of people have to leave their houses and apartments in Frankfurt this Sunday because of the planned defusing of a World War II bomb.

In the evacuation area there is also a thermal power station, an underground high-pressure gas pipeline, district heating connections, transformer stations, an S-Bahn station with railway lines and a police station.

The American 500-kilogram dud was discovered on Tuesday during construction work in the Niederrad district.

The defusing should begin around 11.00 a.m. and, according to the fire brigade, can last into the evening hours.

The approximately 4,500 registered residents have to leave the evacuation area by 8 a.m.

People in quarantine affected by Corona should be picked up.

During the defusing, many trains no longer run to Frankfurt Central Station.

According to Deutsche Bahn, there are also train cancellations between Cologne and Frankfurt.

According to German air traffic control, air traffic at Frankfurt Airport is not affected.

It was only in December that experts from the ordnance disposal service in the Gallus district also successfully defused a 500-kilogram bomb from the Second World War.

Almost 13,000 residents had to leave their homes for this.
