Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Around 1900 soldiers of the Bundeswehr are currently helping in North Rhine-Westphalia to fight the corona pandemic.

In 14 corona vaccination centers nationwide, almost 140 people have been assigned administrative and logistical support since the vaccinations began.

This was announced by the spokesman for the Bundeswehr regional command, Stefan Heydt, on a dpa request.

If cities and municipalities can no longer cope with certain pandemic containment tasks with their own personnel, they can apply for support from the Bundeswehr.

According to Heydt, ample use is made of this.

Around 900 soldiers are deployed to 43 health offices in the 53 independent cities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Mostly they help with contact follow-up and cut corners.

In addition, the so-called “helping hands” of the armed forces are currently on duty in four hospitals and four nursing homes in the country.

There they are responsible, among other things, for serving food, looking after the elderly or taking them for a walk.

In addition, 755 soldiers in 422 old people's and nursing homes are helping with the corona rapid tests.

It is planned that the Bundeswehr will soon assign medical staff such as doctors and paramedics to work in vaccination centers.

"Applications from Cologne and Paderborn have already been submitted," said Heydt.
