Soltau (dpa / lni) - The large participation in the nationwide research project on soil research has meant that the 3000 test kits for tea bags are out of stock for the time being.

The Lüneburg Heath Nature Park is also part of the campaign, which starts in April.

"We are pleased about the many inquiries that have exceeded our expectations by far," said Luise Ohmann from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Halle.

In the project, tea bags are buried and taken out again after three months.

Based on the reduced weight of the tea bags, conclusions could be drawn about the activity of living things in the ground.

The collected data are then scientifically evaluated in the Helmholtz Center.

Participants can also carry out further tests to examine the nature of the soil, including a finger and spade test and a pH value determination of the soil.

Many school classes want to accompany the campaign.

"The whole thing lives from comparing the various locations," said Robin Marwege from the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park.

It can be expected that the soil activity is comparatively low due to the high proportion of sand in the heather.

The soil in the barren landscape is overused.

The "Earth Expedition" is a research project of the Federal Ministry of Research in this year's Bioeconomy Science Year.

Tea bags had already been buried in the heather in the summer.

The activity value for the investigation site, the so-called decomposition rate, was rated as medium to low - a value typical for sandy heather soils.

The Lüneburg Heath Nature Park is a model region for sustainable development and is supported by an association in which the Harburg, Heidekreis and Lüneburg districts and all the municipalities in the Lüneburg, Soltau and Buchholz triangle are involved.
