Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The Corona crisis has not clouded the buying mood of consumers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to preliminary data, the State Statistical Office recorded an increase in sales of three percent in real terms for retail in the northeast.

This means that growth was only slightly below that of 2019, when an increase of 3.2 percent was recorded.

Grocery retailing turned out to be a crisis winner in the 2020 corona year with a plus of 5.7 percent.

For pharmacies and drugstores, the office calculated sales growth of three percent.

But the retail trade with non-food items also increased by 0.5 percent.

Mareike Petersen from the North Trade Association pointed out that the figures also include online trading, which has grown by 20 percent nationwide.

The dealers who were affected by closings, on the other hand, had closed with double-digit minus numbers.

In turn, some industries got away with a black eye, such as the furniture trade.

The temporary VAT reduction in 2020 and the fact that many consumers had canceled their vacation trips played a role in this.

"People were at home a lot."

A lot has been invested in interior fittings, such as new kitchens.

Nationwide, too, the retail trade closed with a plus in the past year.
