Bremerhaven (dpa / lni) - After the announced closure of the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven, the city is hoping for the prospect of continuing the traditional business with 300 jobs.

The shipyard has "a high symbolic value" for Bremerhaven, said Mayor Melf Grantz (SPD), according to a spokesman on Saturday.

Those responsible should look for a solution.

The day before, the management announced to the workforce that the shipyard should be closed at the end of the year.

Then the company will deliver its last major project, a luxury yacht under the project name “Solaris” for an officially undisclosed customer.

The enclosure around the 140 meter long ship was removed a few days ago so that it is visible from the outside for the first time.

The Lloyd shipyard is one of the MV shipyards in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which in turn belong to the Genting Group in Hong Kong.

The Baltic Sea shipyards got into trouble with large cruise ship projects during the corona pandemic.

Around 1200 jobs could be lost.

That is why the sale of the Bremerhaven location has also been on the agenda for months.

If the East German Genting locations got financial help from the state and federal government, Bremerhaven would also have to get something, said the spokesman for Grantz.

The Bremen Senator for Economic Affairs, Kristina Vogt (left), also called for prospects for the continuation of operations, as reported by the media in Bremen and Bremerhaven.

The Bremerhaven shipbuilding group Rönner confirmed this information that it was interested in the Lloyd shipyard and was negotiating a purchase.

The history of the Lloyd shipyard in the port city goes back to 1857. In addition to mega yachts, it specializes in repairs and the extension of ships.
