Lebanon .. A new judge is assigned to file the Beirut port explosion

The Supreme Judicial Council in Lebanon approved this evening, Friday, the appointment of the head of the Beirut Criminal Court, Judge Tariq Al-Bitar, as a judicial investigator in the Beirut port explosion, to succeed Judge Fadi Sawan.


The official Lebanese National Information Agency reported that the Supreme Judicial Council headed by Judge Suhail Abboud approved "the proposal of Justice Minister Marie Claude Negm, to appoint the head of Beirut Criminal Court, Judge Tareq Al-Bitar, as a judicial investigator in the Beirut Port explosion case, to succeed Judge Fadi Sawan."


Yesterday, Thursday, the Criminal Court of Cassation issued a decision to transfer the lawsuit related to the Beirut Port explosion from Judge Fadi Sawan and remove his hand from it.


It is noteworthy that an explosion rocked the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, and resulted in damage to a number of the capital's streets, killing more than 200 people, wounding more than 6 thousand, and leaving 300 thousand people homeless.


In the previous period, 3 defendants in the Port explosion file were arrested in absentia, in addition to the 25 people arrested in the file.
