On the 19th, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Brunei, the ASEAN chairmanship, Ariwan, and Indonesian Foreign Minister Leitno, to exchange views on the situation in Myanmar.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying introduced the details of the call in response to inquiry on the 20th.

  Hua Chunying said that Myanmar is a member of ASEAN, Brunei, as the rotating chairman of ASEAN, and Indonesia as a regional power, are both highly concerned about the situation in Myanmar.

State Councilor Wang Yi spoke with the two foreign ministers at the appointment.

Both Brunei and Indonesia believe that Myanmar’s internal affairs require the Myanmar people to find long-term solutions.

ASEAN will adhere to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs to conduct constructive contacts with Myanmar to help the situation in Myanmar restore stability as soon as possible, and is considering convening an informal special foreign ministers’ meeting.

China is the largest neighbor of Myanmar and ASEAN. ASEAN hopes to maintain communication with China on the situation in Myanmar and hopes that China supports ASEAN in convening a special foreign ministers’ meeting.

  Hua Chunying said that State Councilor Wang Yi expounded China's position, saying that Myanmar is a friendly neighbor of China and a member of the ASEAN family.

No other country is more concerned about the situation in Myanmar than China and ASEAN, and hopes that Myanmar will restore and maintain peace and stability.

The continued turbulence in Myanmar is not in the interest of the Myanmar country and people, nor is it in the common interest of countries in the region.

It is hoped that all parties in Myanmar will proceed from the fundamental and long-term interests of the country and the nation, resolve emerging issues in a peaceful manner under the constitution and legal framework, and continue to advance the process of domestic democratic transformation in an orderly manner.

  Hua Chunying said that State Councilor Wang Yi emphasized that China supports ASEAN in adhering to the principles of non-interference in internal affairs and consensus, playing an active role in the “ASEAN way” and contacting Myanmar as soon as possible.

China supports ASEAN in convening an informal special foreign ministers’ meeting and believes that ASEAN, as a mature regional organization, has sufficient political wisdom to help Myanmar tide over the difficulties.

China is willing to work closely with Brunei, Indonesia and other ASEAN countries to play a constructive role in promoting the cooling of the situation in Myanmar.
