Mainz (AP) - Sports director Martin Schmidt has given 16th place in the Bundesliga as a major goal of FSV Mainz 05.
“At Christmas, the relegation place was the greatest of emotions.
We are striving for this rank with all our might », said Schmidt in an interview with Sport1 (Friday).
The deficit towards the front has already been shortened a little "and if we continue to succeed, then perhaps a direct rescue may also be possible in the end," explained Schmidt.
Mainz currently have 14 points and are up to four points in the relegation rank.
Sports director Schmidt, sports director Christian Heidel and the new coach Bo Svensson only started in the football year 2021 and are now aiming for a long-term cooperation - regardless of the league.
Schmidt, who was head coach at Mainz from 2015 to 2017, has no thoughts of returning to the coaching bench.
“I'm not worrying about it at the moment.
Of course, you never know what will be in five or six years.
But I feel very comfortable in my new role as sports director, I am now gaining experience and looking further, ”said Schmidt.
