Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - The infection rate in Saxony-Anhalt is not going back any further.

The seven-day incidence - i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week - was 92.81 on Friday, as the Ministry of Social Affairs in Magdeburg announced.

This is the highest value in a week, the incidence has been just over 80 for several days, and 90.90 and 90.26 on the previous two days.

From Thursday to Friday afternoon, 326 new infections were reported, and 33 more deaths related to the virus.

Furthermore, Saxony-Anhalt is one of the regions with the highest infection rate after the neighboring state of Thuringia.

The Robert Koch Institute gave the national average at 56.8.

It warned on Friday that the decline in new infections in Germany, which has been achieved for a few weeks, will probably stall in view of more contagious virus variants.

"We may be at a turning point again," said President Lothar Wieler.

A total of 58 301 corona cases have been recorded in Saxony-Anhalt since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 97 intensive care and ventilation beds are occupied with Covid-19 patients;

52 of these patients are artificially ventilated.

All in all, according to the information, 2,311 people died with or from the virus in the country.

Since the vaccination started, 76,749 people across the country have received the first injection, 43,921 also the second.

The nationwide rate for first vaccinations is around 3.5 percent, and that for second vaccinations is 2.0 percent.

Minister of Social Affairs Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) called on nurses and medical staff who, in addition to people aged 80 and over, should first be vaccinated to get immunized.

"All three vaccines approved in the EU offer effective protection against a serious or fatal course of the disease after a Covid 19 infection," explained Grimm-Benne.

The concerns discussed, especially with a view to the Astrazeneca vaccine, are unfounded.

The 14 vaccination centers in Saxony-Anhalt were supplied with a further 19,200 vaccine doses from Astrazeneca on Friday.
