Munich / Frankfurt (dpa) - Refueling and heating oil are more expensive than they have been for about a year.

Diesel and Super E10 have reached their highest prices since January and February 2020, respectively, as the ADAC announced on Friday.

Accordingly, diesel cost a nationwide daily average on Thursday 1.283 euros per liter.

The last time the fuel was more expensive on January 22nd of last year.

For Super E10 it was 1.395 euros - the highest value since February 25, 2020.

The fuel prices have risen sharply since an interim low in early November 2020.

With Super E10 it is around 22 cents, with diesel even around 26 cents.

"The most important driver is the oil price - and we have seen a sharp rise since the beginning of November," said an ADAC expert.

"The CO2 levy and the increase in VAT also made a significant contribution to the price increase."

They caused a jump of around 10 cents at the turn of the year.

Overall, the current fuel price level is “realistic” given the oil price, said the ADAC expert.

"In view of the currently low demand, overpricing would not be enforceable."

According to figures from the Heizoel24 information portal, heating oil also reached the highest price in over a year at a good 62 euros per 100 liters on Thursday, but fell slightly on Friday.

Heating oil thus developed in a similar way to the oil price behind the developments, which saw profit-taking on Friday after previously strong growth.

Most recently, unusually cold winter weather in parts of the USA had a severe impact on oil production and exacerbated the soaring prices.

The frost hinders the extraction, transport and further processing.

"It is estimated that up to 40 percent of US oil production is affected."

Oil prices have been on an upward trend since November, among other things because of the corona vaccinations and speculation that the global economy will pick up strongly.

Significant economic growth typically drives demand and thus also the oil price.

Most recently, the price of the North Sea variety Brent, which is important in Europe, rose above 65 US dollars per barrel (159 liters) for the first time since the beginning of 2020.

After profit-taking, it was $ 63.01 on Friday afternoon, more than 20 percent above the value at the beginning of 2021.

Market observers firmly assume that leading oil states that have organized themselves in Opec + could react to the recent surge in oil prices.

Production volumes could therefore increase in the coming months, which typically puts pressure on prices.

The ADAC expert also sees dampening effects: “We have now reached a price level at which American fracking producers could also return profitably to the market.

I would therefore not participate in the chorus of those who inevitably expect even higher oil prices. "
