Erfurt (dpa / th) - Thuringia's left parliamentary group leader Susanne Hennig-Wellsow has asked the federal government to be more committed to the global distribution of corona vaccines.

Hennig-Wellsow told the German Press Agency that the federal government worked towards fair distribution within the European Union.

"But the fact that billions of people around the world have no access to vaccines for the time being is something they accept without further ado," said Hennig-Wellsow, who is also the party's state chairman.

This is not acceptable.

Hennig-Wellsow is running for the federal chairmanship of the Left - the election should take place in a week at a digital federal party conference.

Hennig-Wellsow said it would be counterproductive "if the rich industrialized countries grab most of the vaccines and only a few hundred million doses are left for most of humanity."

At a virtual summit of the seven largest economic powers (G7), US President Joe Biden pledged up to four billion US dollars for the global vaccination campaign on Friday to advance the fight against the corona pandemic in poorer countries.

The federal government is providing 1.5 billion euros.

Another 500 million euros come from the European Union for the distribution of vaccines, according to dpa information.

Hennig-Wellsow warned: "The longer Corona can spread unhindered in large parts of the world, the more mutations will develop and spread, also in this country."

From their point of view, Germany must vote in the Council of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the application from India and South Africa to suspend the vaccine patents.

In addition, the German government should transfer one billion euros as emergency aid to the vaccination initiative of the World Health Organization, demanded Hennig-Wellsow.
