Fürth (dpa / lby) - The pig population in Bavaria continues to decline.

As of November 3rd, there were a total of 3,025,300 pigs in the 4400 larger pig farms in the Free State.

That is 36,400 fewer than a year ago and the fifth decline in the fall in the fall, as the State Office for Statistics announced on Friday.

The number of farms with at least 50 pigs or 10 breeding sows included in the statistics has also fallen by 200.

2020 was not a good year for pig farmers: Among other things, they suffered from a drop in prices.

Despite the overall decline, the number of animals ready for slaughter increased.

The State Office for Statistics attributes this to a lower demand for pork and bottlenecks in the slaughterhouses during the corona pandemic.

On average, there were 692 pigs in the farms surveyed: 17 more than a year ago.
