Hanau (dpa / lhe) - With demonstrations and a wreath-laying ceremony, various groups and religious communities commemorated the nine deaths of the racially motivated attack a year ago in Hanau on Friday.
According to a spokesman, the police counted around 80 participants in several events by noon.
This included laying a wreath and an "anti-fascist walk" by the German Federation of Trade Unions, Southeast Hesse region.
Another 200 participants were expected in the afternoon at a demonstration and rally by the DIDF youth.
DIDF stands for Democracy İşçi Dernekleri Federasyonu (in German: Federation of Democratic Workers' Associations).
On February 19, 2020, the German Tobias R. shot nine people in Hanau for racist motives, before allegedly killing his mother and ultimately himself.
For the anniversary, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) are expected in Hanau in the evening to commemorate the victims together with survivors and families.
In addition to the Lord Mayor of Hanau, Claus Kaminsky (SPD), the former national striker Rudi Völler will also take part in the event as an honorary citizen of the city.
