Kiel (dpa / lno) - The Corona restrictions have hit tourism in Schleswig-Holstein hard.

In December 2020, the number of overnight stays booked fell by 80 percent to 312,000 compared to the same month last year, as the State Statistical Office for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg announced on Friday.

The number of guests fell by 90.4 percent to 44,000. The reason for this is the ban on accommodation for private travelers that has been in force since the beginning of November 2020.

Throughout 2020, the number of overnight stays in the northernmost state fell by 19.6 percent compared to 2019.

The number of guests fell by 30.3 percent.

Hotels, inns and guest houses with 31.1 percent as well as prevention and rehabilitation clinics with 32 percent were strongly affected by the decline in overnight stays.

Holiday homes and apartments, holiday centers and youth hostels performed better with minus 16.7 percent.

The winners were campsites, which booked 8.8 percent more overnight stays.

Regionally, the losses in overnight stays on the Baltic Sea were the lowest at minus 14.0 percent.

At the North Sea it was minus 20.0 percent and in Holstein Switzerland minus 21.5 percent.

The inland was hit particularly hard, with a decline of 36.4 percent.
