Hanau (AP) - At the memorial service for the victims of the racially motivated attack in Hanau, Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) and Hanau's Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky (SPD) read the names of the nine dead.

Both politicians were very touched at the memorial ceremony, which was limited to around 50 participants on Friday due to the corona.

Bouffier and Kaminsky did not give an extra speech.

Hanau's honorary citizen and ex-national soccer player Rudi Völler lit a memorial candle at the start of the event and read a quotation from Wilhelm Grimm.

A year ago, the 43-year-old German Tobias R. shot nine people with foreign roots in several places in the city in the Rhine-Main area, before allegedly killing his mother and then himself. Previously, he had pamphlets and videos with conspiracy theories and racist views posted on the internet.

The act had caused horror in Germany on the evening of February 19, 2020.
