The Pyrénées-Orientales Assize Court on Wednesday sentenced a mother of five to 20 years of criminal imprisonment for the murder in 2016 of the daughter of her companion.
A sentence in accordance with the requisitions of the Advocate General, who had declared that "hitting a child is the most cowardly act that exists".
"It's a missed appointment with the truth," she had further estimated, stressing that by acknowledging Tuesday having "stirred" the girl, the accused had not really made a confession of her guilt.
"Repeated violence"
The accused, aged 35, was tried since Friday for "repeated violence resulting in death without intention of giving it" on a 2-year-old girl, the child of her partner, a man who has since died, and who was in prison at the time of the facts.
She was also sentenced to deprivation of her civic, civil and family rights for a period of 10 years.
During the investigation, the accused, who had custody of the girl, had assured that her death was due to a fall in the shower.
At the time, she lived in Trouillas, not far from the Perpignan prison where the father of the little girl was imprisoned.
