Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Baden-Württemberg's foreign trade collapsed as expected in the Corona year 2020.

The exports of companies from the southwest fell year-on-year by 7.3 percent to a value of only 190.0 billion euros, as the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday in Stuttgart.

This means that the export value of goods from the southwest was below the 200 billion euros mark for the first time since 2016.

Nevertheless, Baden-Württemberg remains the state with the highest exports, ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.

The exports of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts fell by 12.8 percent, while the exports of machinery were down 11.6 percent.

Almost all important target countries imported less than usual from Baden-Württemberg production last year.

China was an exception: exports to the second most important south-west target country even rose - by 3.8 percent to 17.0 billion euros.

The Chinese economy quickly picked up again after the beginning of the Corona crisis, and the large German car manufacturers in particular benefited from good business in the second half of the year.

The value of the exports of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts to China climbed a whopping 15.1 percent to 6.4 billion euros.
