Pokljuka (dpa) - Without a chance of the second German medal, Franziska Preuss and Erik Lesser only finished seventh in the single mixed at the Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka, Slovenia.

One day after Arnd Peiffer's individual silver, the duo, who were too weak at the shooting range, was 1: 21.2 minutes behind the French world champions Julia Simon and Antonin Guigonnat.

A penalty loop by the Thuringian Lesser and a total of ten spare rounds made a coup impossible like last year.

In Antholz, Preuss and Lesser had won World Cup silver in mixed singles in 2020.

Now Tiril Eckhoff and Johannes Thingnes Bö from Norway secured second place in the youngest biathlon discipline, ahead of Hanna Öberg and Sebastian Samuelsson from Sweden.

This means that after eight of twelve World Championship races for the German ski hunters, the sobering record of just one medal remains.

After a day of rest, the two relays continue on Saturday, before the spectacular mass starts follow on Sunday.
